  • Tip 1 Turn off appliances

    Always turn off lights before you leave a room, use energy saving light bulbs, try and use natural light as much as possible.
  • Tip 2 Lighting

    It makes no sense to leave appliances on if you’re not using them – you’re simply wasting energy, losing money and contributing to climate change. Don’t leave appliances on standby and remember not to leave laptops and mobile phones on charge. Turn the TV off when you’re not watching it.
  • Tip 3 Hot water and pipe insulation

    Both tank and pipe insulation keep your water hotter for longer by reducing the amount of heat that escapes.
    If your water is to hot? adjust your cylinder thermostat it should be set at 60 degree C /140F
  • Tip 4 turn down the heating

    By reducing your room temperature by 1 degree C could cut your heating bills by up to 10 per cent. Set your heating and hot water to come on only when required.
  • Tip 5 Draught proofing & ventilation

    If you can feel cold air coming in around the windows and doors in your home it means warm air is escaping. Draught proofing helps by filling gaps, so that less cold air can get into your home. Fit draught excluders such as self-adhesive sealant strips, or brushes, using polythene sheeting as secondary glazing will help reduce draughts and heat loss. When drought proofing your home, make sure there’s still enough ventilation. If there isn’t you could get condensation on the walls and widows, this can lead to problems with damp and could effect your health.
  • Tip 6 Curtains

    Closing the curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows. Change to heavy curtains lined with a layer of heavy material can reduce heat loss from a room through the windows at night .
  • Tip 7 Taps

    A dripping hot water tap wastes energy, so fix leaking taps, and make sure they’re fully turned off.
  • Tip 8 Laundry

    Always wash a full load, use the tumble dryer as little as possible by drying clothes outside or place on a clothes rail.
  • Tip 9 Shower

    Take a 5 minute shower instead of a bath and cut your water bills.
